“Out of Earth and Water” is my upcoming exhibition, where I will be sharing the spaces of Bankside Gallery, in London, with my friend Edward Hutchison. Therefore, this past weekend, I travelled to London to meet with fellow artist and landscape architect Edward Hutchison, with whom I am collaborating on our upcoming exhibition “Out of Earth and Land” at the Bankside Gallery, located beside the Tate Modern on the banks of the Thames.
Our project, rooted in a deep friendship and mutual admiration for each other’s work, focuses on exploring the connections between land and water through our art and a desire to connect more intensely with the environment and nature.
During our visit to the gallery, we familiarized ourselves with the space, both internal and external, and discussed the logistics of hanging our artwork and the lighting for the work.
With just two months left until the exhibition opens, we are carefully addressing both the overall themes of our work and the specific details needed for the show, which will feature a diverse array of media including preparatory sketches, drawings, watercolours, and three-dimensional wall-hung pieces.
We are looking forward to sharing more details with you shortly.
Exhibition “Out of Earth & Water”
The title of the exhibition incorporates the ideas that have been inspiring both artists in their recent work. Water, waves, aquascape, landscape and all the elements accompanying their movements are recurring themes in Jacqueline Duncan’s work. With her new series “Waves”, the artist explores their complex forms using various materials.
British artist Edward Hutchison, with whom Jacqueline Duncan will exhibit at the Bankside Gallery is inspired by trees, roots, and plant life as a whole. His watercolor works create evocative abstract images that shed light on intimate elements of nature.
About Jacqueline Duncan
Jacqueline Duncan works in Devon. Born in 1967, she studied at the London College of Fashion and lived and worked in Milan, São Paulo, and New York, where she worked with fashion before dedicating herself to the visual arts. Depicting nature through mixed media, drawing, painting, semi precious stones, wood, stainless steel mesh and dressmaker pins, she engages with the ever-changing aquatic worlds she observes.
Jacqueline’s work makes an impression with its precision, level of detail, and particularly the play of perspectives created with the effects of light, shadow, and movement.
Among solo and group exhibitions over the past 25 years, highlights include the London Art Biennale (2023), Royal West of England Academy (2019 and 2023), Museum of Contemporary Art in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil (2005)
About Edward Hutchison
Edward Hutchison’s paintings investigate the energy of complex root systems and the vigor of the dawn chorus, the life force of ancient oaks and the harmony of wildflowers, encouraging us to deepen our connection with the natural environment. ‘An artist at war for environmental causes’ is how he has been described, creating purposeful paintings.
Hutchison, who attended the COP26, cites a lack of understanding among decision-makers as being detrimental to the environment and aims for his paintings to be both stimulating and provocative.
